I try to have a sketchbook or something to draw on with me everywhere I go and always have my favourite Kaweco Sports fountain pen in my pocket. Whether I am working en plein air or in the studio, I always start with a preparatory sketch. I think these sketches have a spontaneity which is not always present in the longer, finished pieces. The main purpose of the sketch is to resolve composition and trial colour application.
Here is a selection of work from my sketchbooks reflecting both urban and rural landscapes. All of the sketches have been drawn in situ.
